2016 is the year when perforating changed. How do we know that? Well, when you design and build a revolutionary new perforating gun, you naturally take a bit of interest in the history of perforating. In doing so, we’ve learned several useful lessons from the history of the wireline industry that have guided us during the development of TriStim.
The history of perforating up to now has generally been a race for ‘the biggest bang’. But as with the history of Formula 1 racing, we’ve proved that by making a simple change in a configuration of the perforating charges, there are significant performance benefits to be gained from re-thinking the placement of power.
Global expansion underway
January 2016 saw 150 deployments of the unique TriStim perforating gun across the US and Canada. This significant global expansion comes straight off the back of our successful field deployments in Oklahoma during 2015. The Oklahoma trials confirmed the benefits of the TriStim concept and demonstrated the capability of the fully commercialised gun to significantly enhance productivity.
As part of this global roll out, we’ve now signed a collaboration agreement with a leading service provider in Canada and we’re poised to sign up further partners in New Zealand, the US and the Middle East during the coming weeks and months. This gives us the global reach to enable provision of first class support to customers around the world.
As part of the support process we’ve recently launched a comprehensive online training system to train the scores of assembly engineers around the world who will be deploying TriStim.
The commercialisation journey
So how did we get to this significant milestone? We all had huge faith in the initial concept of a simple change in the configuration of the charges that we began with and we set out to prove it and commercialise it.
We first confirmed the gun concept would work with Finite Element Modelling, we validated that the concept would work in real well conditions using API Section IV Tests, we then verified that the productivity increases seen in these tests would be replicated across the entire well using CFD Simulation.
All of these tests provided validation of significant productivity benefits which we then observed in reality when we ran the gun in real wells in Oklahoma.
January provides the commercial proof for TriStim with the guns now being deployed by mainstream operators around the world.

Essentially, intelligent use of perforating has great potential to deliver increased efficiency and lower service costs which can ensure that operator’s economics remain viable despite the low oil price.
