As a relatively new blog in the oil and gas space, we’ve had to spend lots of time researching what everyone else has been up to in the digital realm. This has been an enlightening experience and we thought it was worthwhile presenting some of the results in a useful format.
So, today, we’re pleased to be publishing our big dynamic list of 50 of the best oil & gas blogs and news sites.
It’s dynamic, because it’s based on live audience and engagement data (courtesy of Inkybee) that gives an indication of how each of the sites is connected to the rest of the internet, and also to it’s own audience. This in itself is interesting because it allows the list to be sorted according to three criteria of relevancy to oil and gas, estimated size of audience, and measured levels of engagement with the content.
But are they the best sites? Well, this process is not an exact science so there’s definitely no right answer to whether any of the site’s we’ve included are any better than the others. But given the data that is publicly available, it’s probably a pretty reasonable view of what’s on offer at the moment.
There are not enough vibrant oil and gas blogs around at the moment
Whilst the sector is certainly very active at the moment, one of things we learned during the process is that – save for a few valiant examples (see the list) – there are not nearly enough vibrant oil and gas blogs around at the moment.
This is probably not a good thing for the sector because it means that the ideas being expressed and circulated are those of the status quo. It would be great to hear a few more personal outlooks, whether from individuals or small companies.
In fact, now is a great time to be setting up an oil and gas blog because of this lack of competition. Blogs are one of the most powerful means of expressing your ideas and, as the realm of the experts, a well written blog is guaranteed to escalate your reputation and visibility within the whole oil and gas sector. Can we put out a clarion call for a few more industry experts to take the time to tell their stories?
Too many sites are sharing the same stories and there is room for more original content
We also learned that far too many sites are sharing the same stories and there is room for the creation of much more original content.
As we all know, the oil and gas sector is full of incredibly interesting companies doing fascinating things and it currently doesn’t look like we’re hearing much about them. The sector looks like it is far too focussed on market orientated stories relating to activities of the big oil companies. Whilst these are important, is it time to look beyond these stories to seek out what else is going on?
We’d love to your thoughts on all of this in the comments. Also, do let us know if you think we’ve missed any sites that are out there now. We’ll re-create this list again in the future and we hope to see some great new blogs next time!
